Veteran honors and more for Farmington area seniors

The City of Farmington Hills offers dozens of programs for area adults age 50 and better at the Center for Active Adults, located in the Costick Center on 11 Mile Road between Middlebelt and Inkster. The Center is open Monday-Friday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Advance registration is required for all programs. To register for events or for more information, call 248-473-1830.

Flu Shots: Nov. 1, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Bring a picture ID with your current address and Medicare/Medicaid insurance card. Cash fee of $25 for those without Medicare/Medicaid, or pay with a credit card. High dose flu shots are available for a fee of $43 ($38 for the vaccine plus a $5 administration fee) for those ages 65 and older. Walk-in only, no pre-registration is available. For quicker service, wear a short-sleeved shirt or a shirt with a sleeve that can be rolled up to the top of your arm.

Law Day: Nov. 3, 9:45 a.m.- 2 p.m.

Come to the Sixth Annual Law Day and get information about wills and trusts, family law, guardianship, powers of attorney and more, with a representative of the Oakland County Bar Association. Lunch is included. You must register by calling 248-473-1830.

Memory Screening: Nov. 3, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

In honor of National Memory Screening Day, a free memory screening will be offered by representatives from Botsford Commons. Sign up in Conway Hall. No fee.

Mindful Memory Movie-“His Neighbor Phil”: Nov. 3, 1 p.m.

This new movie is a realistic and heartwarming story of a couple dealing with the wife’s early onset Alzheimer’s disease. Popcorn and soda will be served. Sponsored by Synergy Home Care.

Book Discussion: Nov. 3, 1 p.m.

Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. Join a lively, informal book discussion on the first Thursday of each month. Paperback copies are available in advance for checkout at 50 cents/residents, $1/non-residents.

First Friday Ballroom: Nov. 4, 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

Enjoy ballroom dancing featuring the Mike Wolverton Band with buffet dinner included. All levels of experience and adult ages, singles and couples welcome. $10 by Nov. 3 deadline, $12 after.

Driver Safety Program: Nov. 9 and Nov. 10, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Participate in an AARP-sponsored comprehensive driver refresher course that may reduce the cost of your auto insurance. Attendance at both days is required. Fee is $18 for AARP members, $23 for non-members.

Stars and Stripes Forever: Nov.11, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Salute veterans at this annual commemoration of those who served our country. Enjoy an honor guard ceremony, keynote speeches, recitation of veterans’ names, a special luncheon, and dancing to a live band. Fee is $8 with registration by Nov. 7 deadline, $10 after. Complimentary admission offered to veterans residing in Farmington Hills and Farmington, must pre-register in Conway Hall by Nov. 7. Call 248-473-1830.

Turkey, Pumpkins & Bingo, Oh My!: Nov. 15, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Connect with friends while playing Bingo, with an array of prizes plus a musical performance and a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Fee is $8 by Nov. 10 registration deadline, $10 after.

Newcomer Welcome Tour: Nov. 17, 10 a.m.-11 a.m.

Residents of Farmington and Farmington Hills 50 and Better can tour the Center for Active Adults at the Costick Center and learn more about services, events, trips, classes, and volunteer opportunities. Includes a welcome packet with a coupon for a complimentary lunch, gym class, swim or line dance. Residents only.

Friday’s Film: Nov. 18, 12 p.m.-3 p.m.

Enjoy a delicious lunch, popcorn, candy, and a beverage, and watch “Miracles from Heaven.” Fee is $5 in advance, $7 at the door.
