Farmington Hills-based credit union supports women’s shelters

Farmington Hills-based Community Choice Credit Union’s Community Choice Foundation will award $4,220 to two local nonprofits that help women who have left high-risk situations.

Clair’s Home, a shelter for survivors of human trafficking, and HAVEN – Oakland County, a residential shelter for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, received $1,220 and $3,000, respectively from the “Give Big” grant program.

“Through this grant program, our goal is to not only help financially but to also get involved and create a meaningful partnership with each of our grantees,” said Steven Hernandez, Foundation Development Coordinator of the Community Choice Foundation. “Whether that means sending team members out for a day of volunteering or helping to build awareness or raise funds, we’re in this together and are here for support.”

Clair’s Home, which will open later this fall, can accommodate up to 20 women and their children for up to two years and provides a safe harbor where survivors of human trafficking can reside while they get back on their feet. The funds will be used to help support the hiring of a program manager who will be working with clients.

In late September, Community Choice Credit Union team members spent a total 130 hours volunteering at the Home as a part of their annual Give Big Weekend. Together the volunteers helped clean, prep and paint several rooms at the house, including the dining room, living room, bedrooms and hallways.

HAVEN’s grant will support the provision of food, transportation and special client needs, including access to birth certificates, medications, and other critical resources.

The Give Big Grants program is made possible through the Credit Union’s payroll deduction program, in which more than half of Community Choice’s 244 employees have elected to donate a portion of their pay to the Community Choice Foundation and the organizations it supports.

The Community Choice Foundation is currently accepting letters of inquiry for the grant program on a rolling basis. The next winner will be announced in December. To apply, contact the manager of any Community Choice Credit Union Member Center:
