Hills-based nonprofit hosts workshop for transgender youth

Farmington Hills-based Stand with Trans will host a day-long workshop at Affirmations in Ferndale October 16 for transgender youth ages 12 to 23.

From 9:15 a.m. until 4 p.m., sessions will address topics that include coping skills, fine art collage, music therapy, pet therapy, spoken work poetry, verbal self-defense, and more. All youth will receive lunch, snacks, a “goody bag” with Arbonne grooming products, and a t-shirt. Affirmations provides a safe space with gender neutral bathrooms.

ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) attorney Jay Kaplan will speak to kids about legal rights, especially in schools, and Sara Wiener, LMSW, at University of Michigan’s pediatric/adolescent gender management clinic part of Mott children’s hospital will speak to parents at 3 p.m.

Founded by Farmington Hills resident Roz Keith, Stand with Trans provides the tools needed by transgender youth so they will be empowered, supported and validated as they transition to their authentic life.
