Watch chimney swifts swirl in Farmington

A September event at the Winery/Powerhouse building in Farmington will raise funds to support a smokestack that’s home to as many as 50,000 Chimney Swifts.

The Swift Sanctuary and the Detroit Audubon Society will host “Swifts Night Out,” on September 24 and 25, from 6 p.m. to dusk each night. The event will include music, refreshments, a raffle, and the chance to watch the avian “funnel cloud” as swifts swirl right down into this historic winery.

Last year, Detroit Audubon signed a partnership agreement with the Swift Sanctuary, including a check to underwrite the purchase of a chimney camera and the Internet cost to livestream from April to November for at least the next five years. Detroit Audubon also agreed to provide educational programming at the Sanctuary and will be exploring ways to do research with the swifts as well.
