Farmington Hills seniors help Botsford families start the school year

Residents at the Botsford Commons Senior Community have helped their student “buddies” at Botsford Elementary prepare for the school year, with the gift of backpacks and school supplies.

Residents from the independent community at Botsford Commons organized multiple assembly lines to fill backpacks, which were donated by Costco, before distributing them at an August 30 barbecue. School supplies were donated by residents, their families, and Botsford staff members.

Independent living resident, Peggy Fura, who donated her time filling backpacks and at the barbecue, said the project is “one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.”

Botsford Commons residents and Botsford Elementary students share many events during the school year, including a monthly senior reader “buddy” program and sponsoring families during the holidays. School principal Joe Schiffman has been a huge supporter of the partnership.

“All of us at Botsford Elementary are extremely grateful for the overwhelming generosity shown to our children by the residents of Botsford Commons,” he said. “Our students love their senior buddies, and I believe that love is returned in full.”

Barb Smith, Fullness of Life and Volunteer Services Coordinator for Botsford Commons, has for many years been the driver behind the “buddy” events.

“I truly love to help the residents give back to our community,” she said. “They love to help others and kids are always first in their hearts.”
