Starting September 12, Farmington Hills residents will have the option of free, weekly curbside pickup for clothing and small household items.
Simple Recycling Inc. will soon send introductory postcards and green bags to single family homes. Residents can fill the green bags with unwanted clothing, textiles and other household items and set them out for collection on the same day as their weekly trash and recycling collection. In addition to collecting the bags, Simple Recycling will leave replacements.
Farmington Hills joins the RRRASOC (Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland County) member cities of Farmington, South Lyon, Walled Lake and Wixom as well as the Village of Milford and Milford Township community in offering the service.
Residents are strongly encouraged to continue donating unwanted clothing to their favorite charity or thrift shop; the Simple Recycling program is designed to capture the 85 percent of recyclable textiles still going to landfills.
“We’re trying to capture material that’s going out to the landfill, only for the reason that people don’t have an avenue to get it into the value chain,” RRRASOC General Manager Mike Csapo said at a July city council study session.
