Farmington area students display academic excellence

Four Farmington area National Merit Scholars

Four Farmington Public Schools students were named National Merit Scholars in recognition of their dedication and hard work during their high school careers.

Mujtaba Hameed of Harrison High School, Sarosh Irani of North Farmington High School, and Ponnila Sampath-Kumar of North Farmington High School all received the National Merit Wayne State University Scholarship. Elizabeth Sullivan of North Farmington High School received the National Merit University of Oklahoma Scholarship.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation was established in 1955 and provides $33 million annually in scholarships to an average of 4,000 high school seniors. The scholarships are provided by independent corporate and college sponsors. In 2016, more than 7,300 scholarships were awarded to high school graduates with exceptional academic and extracurricular records. The students often hold leadership positions in afterschool programs or community organizations, and must be recommended by an official at their high school.

Elizabeth James Awarded Departmental Scholarship

Elizabeth James of Farmington Hills was one of more than 40 students to receive an award from Miami University’s architectural and interior design departments.

James was awarded the URS scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year. She is earning a Bachelor of Art majoring in Architecture.

Local students named to John Carroll Spring 2016 Dean’s List

These John Carroll University students were named to the Dean’s List for the Spring 2016 term:

  • Kevin Pachuta of Farmington
  • Margaret Leever of Farmington Hills
