Fire destroys recycling truck at Hillside Elementary

Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh said that a recycling truck picking up paper and cardboard at Hillside Elementary School Wednesday morning caught fire, creating a plume of black smoke that was seen for miles.

Firefighters were called to the school parking lot, at 36801 W 11 Mile Rd., shortly after 11:30 a.m., Unruh said. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause, but it appears mechanical, he added. Firefighters from two stations responded; no one was injured.

Farmington Public Schools released a statement mid-afternoon, noting the incident and its aftermath will not delay Hillside’s September 6 opening. Also, the district “will be taking extra precautions during the clean up” to ensure the environment is protected.
