Retired Farmington hockey coach loses battle with cancer

Retired Farmington High hockey coach Bill Newton lost a lengthy battle with colon cancer early Saturday afternoon.

His daughter, Annie, made the announcement through the coach’s Twitter account:

A former assistant coach, Newton came out of retirement in 2013 when head coach Mark Vellucci moved to Novi High School. That year, Newton led the Falcons to a 15-10 regular season record and a state title, according to a team history at farmingtonathletics.com.

“That state championship year will always go down as one of my great memories,” he told the Farmington Press.

Newton announced his retirement this past spring, citing his health as a primary reason for the move. Funeral arrangements were not available Sunday evening, but will be added to this post when the information becomes available.
