For a fifth year, friends and family will come together in June to support a Farmington Hills family recovering from a devastating 2012 attack.
The Cipriano Classic 5k Fun Run and Walk steps off at the Farmington Family YMCA, 28100 Farmington Rd., on June 3 at 7 p.m. Registration is available at ciprianoclassic.com or in person at the Y until race time on June 3. The entry fee is $40, and proceeds will support the continuing medical recovery and daily living needs of Tanner, Salvatore, and Isabella Cipriano.
Salvatore and the children’s mother, Rose, were severely injured, and their father, Robert, died in the attack. Their older brother Tucker and his friend Mitchell Young are both serving life sentences for the crime.
The event includes a fun, high-energy warm-up at 6:45 p.m., followed by a few announcements and a message from the Cipriano family. The race will begin at 7 p.m. and winds through the neighborhood surrounding the Y. Post-race refreshments will be provided.
Planned by an all-volunteer committee, the event has thus far raised more than $200,000 for the Cipriano Children’s Trust. Rose Cipriano expressed gratitude for the support, and told Race Director Jenny Birmelin, that “last year’s race was once again the best day of the year for our family.”
“Tanner and Isabella continue to thrive in school and in extracurricular activities,” Rose said in a statement. “While we are grateful for how far we have come as a family, our continued focus is on Salvatore. Although Sal has made great strides in his extremely complicated recovery, he still has a long journey ahead. Salvatore is currently undergoing outpatient therapies including: Neurological Recovery, O.T., P.T., and Life Skills, all of which is covered very little by insurance. And so, as one of the primary sources of donations, the Cipriano Classic is an important benefit to the Cipriano Children’s Trust fund and it will directly impact Salvatore’s determined road to recovery.”
The 5K is open to all and is child-, stroller-, and pet-friendly. Everal Race Management will provide electronic chip timing. Those who can’t attend and wish to make a donation may do so at the Farmington YMCA or at ciprianoclassic.com.
