The Farmington Beautification Committee begins its third Sunflower Explosion contest, with starter sunflowers available Saturday at the Farmington Farmers and Artisans Market.

The committee distributed more than two hundred seedlings during each of the last two springs, along with 150 flowering kale plants. Plants will be distributed May 14 and 21, courtesy Springbrook Gardens. A $1 donation will help defray the costs associated with planting of “Cabbage Island,” at Grand River and Shiawassee, “Barber Island,” at Grand River and Farmington Road, other plantings throughout the city, and many other projects.

Contest sign-up sheets and contest rules will be given out with each starter sunflower. Contest rules will also be available on the City of Farmington website and City Hall information desk, 23600 Liberty St.

The Beautification Committee will also, after a two-year hiatus, bring the Scarecrow Contest back to downtown Farmington, and Sunflower Explosion prizes for the biggest, most, and most unusual sunflowers will be awarded, along with the announcement of the winners of the Scarecrow Contest, at a fall date that will be announced later.

Volunteers and donations are welcome to assist with committee programs, which include landscaping and flower arrangement awards, and the hanging of flags throughout downtown Farmington. Learn more at
