‘Green’ Dunkin Donuts celebrates ribbon cutting

The first Dunkin Donuts restaurant located in Farmington, which celebrated its grand opening Tuesday with a Greater Farmington Area Chamber ribbon cutting, brings more than sweet treats to the community.

Owners Vijay and Pradip Patel say their store, one of several they own in metro Detroit, will soon be certified under the “DD Green” program. Not only does the store have LED lighting and other energy efficient features, but the entire process of remodeling the former Big Boy restaurant at 20788 Farmington Rd. was subject to strict guidelines.

“It was part of the whole construction process,” Vijay Patel said. As an example, he added, all construction materials were disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner, and no one could smoke while on the site.

Dunkin Donuts occupies the north end of the space; the Patels say they’ve had quite a bit of interest in the vacant south end. They chose Farmington after looking at their existing locations and identifying opportunities for growth.

“This place made sense,” Vijay Patel said.
